Al Ahly midfielder Saleh Gomaa, who starred in Egypt’s U20 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2014, says he’s ready for a call-up to the national team.
“I hope I’ll be called up during this next period. We have two extremely important matches coming up, and an extremely important period in general,” the 23-year-old said in an interview with ON Sport TV.
Gomaa, who was also on Egypt’s 2012 Summer Olympics squad in London, had a solid campaign with the domestic league champions, especially during the latter half of the season.
“I’ve felt since even before I joined Al Ahly that the national team’s technical staff are convinced in my abilities,” he said.
“They were just waiting for me to get some playing time, and that happened a little late but thank God.”
Egypt is set to play two critical 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Uganda, away on Aug. 31 and at home on Sep. 5. The matches will go a long way in determining the Pharaohs fate on the road to Russia.
